Bus Stop
Conceptual Design Pennsylvania State University Fall 2024
Playwright: William Inge
Set Designer: Sarah Bidini
Using Inge’s early life in Independence, Kansas as inspiration I set out to create a box set reflective of a 20th-century time capsule reliant on boundaries. By basing the diner on 1930s design rather than the 50s when the play is set I allow an unspoken history beyond what is written in the script reflective of the characters’ similar structure. I advance through the 20-year difference through the use of updated appliances and posters from different years leading up to 1955. Conceptually I invoke the use of boundaries to emphasize the contrasting themes of isolation and togetherness present in the show. Additionally, by creating separate playing spaces for the characters, I provide a sense of balance to the stage.
