Based on Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 by James McNeill Whistler

Design Process

Using the 1871 painting Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 by James McNeill Whistler as the environment in which the world exists, I set out to create a stage that embodies the somber yet powerful grace that is motherhood. Relying on the elements of the painting as my navigator I conduct a historic case study on Whistler, his mother, and the house in which the piece was painted. My goal is to recreate the room as accurately as my research deems possible while providing artistic changes that allow more play with dramatic action in addition to maintaining the integrity of the painting itself. Holding hands with Whistler, I take my first steps into the world of set design and develop a stage that houses five scenes with circling themes of grief, family, loyalty, and hope.
